Since 1992 Mansfield has had a chocolate factory down town, which makes some of the most delicious treats around. This chocolate factory’s name is The Squirrel’s Den. If you’re lucky enough to walk through the door when they are making some of their products, you will be delighted by the smells: chocolate being tempered, popcorn balls being made, fudge being poured into the fudge pans to cool. Oh what wonderful smells these are! I know because I was lucky enough to take in some of these wonderful aromas. Ladonna, the owner, was tempering the milk chocolate as I walked
through the door the other day. I can’t describe the wonderful smell the chocolate makes as it warms up to just the right temperature for Ladonna to start to make her Mellow Cups or her nut clusters. The First day I walked in, she was making popcorn balls. That was a treat. Not only was the air delightful, but also to watch the girls make the popcorn balls was amazing. It takes a lot of experience to make popcorn balls. I dare say, that I could not do it. I know I would get the tools caught in the kettle and would not make a very round ball. The skill in those four walls is astounding. To know when the milk or dark chocolate is tempered just enough or when the popcorn is coated just right to make the popcorn balls is amazing. I stood in awe and watched Ladonna make all sorts of chocolate treats. She painted the candy wrapper with chocolate and then filled them with mouth-watering treats. Just enough treat in the wrapper so that the chocolate she poured over them filled the cup just right. If you want to see art that you can eat, stop down town at the Squirrel’s Den and enjoy the sights, smells and tastes of Mansfield’s chocolate factory. |
